UA Earns Spot on National Community Service Honor Roll
Akron, Ohio, Feb. 14, 2008 — The University of Akron has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Service to the community is an integral part of our mission,” says Dr. Elizabeth Stroble, senior vice president and provost and chief operating officer. “This honor is an acknowledgement of the commitment by our students, faculty and staff to help transform our community, and themselves, into something greater.” The honor roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on the scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses. UA's students, faculty and staff participated in several community service programs last year, including: Make a Difference Day in the University Park neighborhood; Centers for Nursing, which are community-based clinics that give graduate nursing students educational opportunity; service-learning projects tied to classroom instruction; and an alternative spring break in which 60 students traveled to the Gulf Coast to assist with hurricane relief efforts.
