UA to Host 420 Middle and High School Students at Science Olympiad

Akron, Ohio, March 6, 2008 -- The annual Akron Regional Science Olympiad Competition at The University of Akron has drawn 420 area middle and high school students on 30 teams.

The competition, in the Student Union Ballroom and selected satellite locations, is from 9 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Awards are at 3 p.m.

Schools represented are Central Christian Middle and High, Copley-Fairlawn Middle, Copley High, Coventry Junior High, Crestwood High, Glen Oak High, Glenwood Middle, Harding Middle, Hudson High, John R. Lea Middle, Kimpton Middle, Nordonia Middle and High, Norton Middle, Oakwood Middle, Orrville Middle, Revere Middle and High, St. Hilary, St. Sebastian, Seton Catholic, Stow-Munroe Falls High, Waynedale High, West Holmes Middle and Woodridge High.

Events are Amphibians and Reptiles, Anatomy, Balloon Launch Glider, Bio-Process Lab, Crave the Wave, Disease Detectives, Ecology, Food Science, Meteorology, Metric Mastery, Mystery Architecture, Oceanography, Reach for the Stars, Road Scholar, Robo Cross, Rocks & Minerals, Science Crime Busters, Science Word, Scrambler, Simple Machines, Tower Building, Trajectory and Write It-Do It.

“Science Olympiad is a wonderful activity for middle and high school students and a rewarding experience for all of our University of Akron volunteers," says event co-director Dr. Carin Helfer, assistant director of the university's Akron Global Polymer Academy.

Other co-directors are UA's Kathy Crooks, coordinator for STEM projects, and Brian Bagatto, associate professor in biology, and Sharon Esker, president and program director of Space Domes America of Fairlawn.
