Akron, Ohio, March 27, 2008 — Duke University law professor Arti K. Rai will visit The University of Akron School of Law on Thursday, April 10 at 5 p.m. as part of the annual Albert and Vern Oldham Intellectual Property Law lecture series. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the UA School of Law, 150 University Ave., Room 151. A reception will immediately follow.

Rai is an expert in patent law, legal aspects of the biopharmaceutical industry and health care regulation, and is nationally renowned for her research on biotechnology patents. She will speak on the subject “The Supreme Court (Re)Discovers Patents: Implications for the Biopharmaceutical Industry.”

Rai's current research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on intellectual property issues raised by collaborative research and development in areas ranging from synthetic biology to drug development. Her work recently has been published in the Georgetown Law Journal; Intellectual Property Rights in Frontier Industries: Biotech and Software; Public Library of Science: Medicine; International Public Goods and Transfer of Technology Under a Globalized Intellectual Property Regime; and Columbia Law Review.

The Albert and Vern Oldham Intellectual Property Law Endowment Fund was established at the UA School of Law by Edwin W. “Ned” Oldham, senior partner at the former Oldham & Oldham Co., L.P.A., now Hahn Loeser + Parks, Akron. Albert and Vern Oldham founded Oldham & Oldham, a patent law firm, in 1947. The fund is devoted to furthering the UA School of Law's mission in the area of intellectual property law. Ned Oldham sought to strengthen the teaching of patent, copyright and trademark law at the school and to focus on the importance of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit that drives continued growth, progress and excellence in our community and nation.
