'Shakespeare in the Spring' Event April 10

Akron, Ohio, April 1, 2008 — "HBO Shakespeare" will be the focus of the 2008 Shakespeare in the Spring event, sponsored by The University of Akron Department of English on Thursday, April 10, at the Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill. This event is free and open to the public.

An opening session will begin at 3:30 p.m., featuring a special panel presentation on the topic, "From Shakespeare to HBO: Approaches to Popular Drama."

At 5 p.m., the annual lecture, "It's not Television, It's Shakespeare: Literary-Historical Adaptation in HBO's 'Rome,'" will be delivered by Dr. L. Monique Pittman, director of honors at Andrews University.

Immediately following the annual lecture will be the Shakespeare Essay Prize Contest awards ceremony, at which two top prizes — one graduate and one undergraduate — and three honorable mentions will be awarded for papers written on Shakespeare for UA English department courses.

A Shakespeare Gala Birthday Party with hors d'oeurves and birthday cake will cap off the event.
