Susan E. Hankinson to Discuss Nurses' Health Study April 22
Akron, Ohio, April 10, 2008 — Dr. Susan Hankinson, Sc.D., M.P.H., R.N., will discuss the Nurses' Health Study and its role in advancing the understanding of women's health at The University of Akron College of Nursing's 10th Annual Distinguished Lecture Series. The presentation will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 in the university's Student Union Gardner Theatre. The lecture is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception in Student Union Ballrooms B, C, D and E. Hankinson is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard University Medical School and in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is the principal investigator with the Nurses' Health Study, a landmark study that has been ongoing since 1976. The study is the largest prospective investigation into the risk factors for major chronic diseases in women. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Southern Maine, master's degrees in environmental health and epidemiology at the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in epidemiology at Harvard University. During her career, she has held a variety of clinical positions working primarily in postsurgical units. She has taught at all levels of nursing. The 2008 Distinguished Lecture is supported by a gift from the estate of former UA nursing faculty member Evelyn Tovey, who is remembered by the College of Nursing as a caring person and very competent educator committed to her students.
