University Park Alliance Hires Beth Houseman as Assistant Director
Akron, Ohio, April 14, 2008 — Beth A. Houseman has joined The University of Akron as assistant director of University Park Alliance (UPA) — a partnership led by the University, the city of Akron and Summa Health System. In her new position, Houseman is focusing on developing a brand strategy for University Park and strengthening UPA's role as the centralized marketing arm of University Park as well as its brand manager. “University Park is home to distinctive, livable neighborhoods," says Houseman. "It is the city center of education, medicine, technology and culture. Residents of diverse backgrounds give University Park an intellectual and international flavor. The brand core for University Park is found within this set of truths. Brand creation is important not only to those outside the area but to its current residents, businesses and workers as it promotes pride and anticipation of more good things to come." Houseman also assists UPA executive director Ken Stapleton with revitalization and redevelopment efforts within University Park. “Bringing Beth on board adds more marketing and economic development 'know-how' to the work of University Park Alliance. Her experience will help UPA further create a 'sense of place' in University Park that will attract and retain the people, businesses, events and visitors that University Park needs to continue to grow and prosper,” says Stapleton. Houseman, a West Akron resident, has more than 20 years of experience in economic development, marketing and fundraising. She has served as economic development specialist for Summit County and public law research associate for Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP. She also was co-owner of Trendesign LLC, an advertising and marketing firm, and most recently worked as a major gifts development director for United Way of Summit County. Houseman was a member of the board of directors of the Summit County Port Authority for six years and has been a member of the board of trustees of the Akron-Canton Airport for 18 years. She is currently serving her fifth term as president of the airport. Houseman has a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, and a master's degree in public administration from UA. The University Park Alliance is a partnership between The University of Akron, the City of Akron, Summa Health System, Akron Beacon Journal, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, Akron Public Schools, the Greater Akron Chamber, and the University Park Development Corporation to help revitalize the University Park neighborhoods. Major funding for this effort is provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Return...
