When the Communist Party seized control of China in 1949, the Truman administration had not yet formulated a new policy toward China. That changed when the Korean War began and the United States adopted a policy of diplomatic isolation and military containment. Xu examines Congress’s role in Sino-U.S. relations by studying the years between the Communist Party’s establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the restoration of official diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1979. Xu received a bachelor’s degree in Chinese history and a master’s degree in modern Chinese history from Sun Yat-sen University and a doctorate in U.S. history from the University of Maryland, College Park. Xu has taught at Friends University in Kansas since 2002. The 407-page “Congress and the U.S.-China Relationship, 1949-1979,” ISBN 978-1-931968-39-3, is available from the UA Press for $59.95 by visiting www.uakron.edu/uapress or by calling 1-877-UAPRESS. — 30 — DW 072108 - 206 Return...
