Workshops Offer Development for Educators

Akron, Ohio, Aug. 6, 2001 — Area educators can learn about the latest educational trends and new motivational techniques while interacting with regionally and nationally known experts at a fall series of multi-campus Teachers Professional Development Workshops.

Held by The University of Akron's College of Education and Continuing Education and Evening Division, the two-day workshops benefit educators, school administrators, counselors, parents and anyone who is committed to educating youths, according to interim program director Dr. Giannina D'Agruma.

Through the use of distance learning technology, workshop participants at sites throughout Northeast Ohio can see, hear and interact with the class instructor and other students. Class sites for this "virtual campus" are located in The University of Akron's Goodyear Polymer Center in Summit County, East Canton High School in Stark County, Orange High School in Cuyahoga County, Brunswick High School in Medina County and Wayne College in Wayne County.

Graduate credit or noncredit continuing education hours (CEUs) are available.

The Fall 2001 program, beginning Aug. 31, includes topics such as Using Ethics for Educational Technology; Motivating Reluctant Readers; Crisis Intervention; Preparing for Ohio Graduation Test — A Guide to Improving Instruction; Pathwise Mentoring Training; Understanding and Utilizing Your Clout in Columbus: The New Political Era for Educators; Grant Writing; Internet Literacy; Technology Integration: Frameworks for Success; Understanding, Surviving and Working with Parents of Children with Disabilities; Building Positive Outcome for Culturally Diverse Students; and Adapting Mathematics and Science Instruction to Accommodate Students in Inclusive Settings.

"The Educational Speaker Workshop Series offers a wonderful opportunity for teachers to earn graduate credits through innovative interactive learning by means of videoconferencing — without the worry of traveling to a distant university," D'Agruma says. "The series offers an opportunity for teachers throughout Ohio to share ideas and collaborate in improving professional practices at the classroom level.

"One-hundred-fifty-nine teachers enrolled in the Spring 2001 series. We expect even more teachers to enroll this fall."
