Constitutional Law Symposium is Oct. 17-18
Akron, Ohio, Sept. 16, 2002 — The University of Akron School of Law's Center for Constitutional Law will host a symposium — “John Bingham and the Meaning of the 14th Amendment” — on Oct. 17-18. The free symposium, which is intended for attorneys, judges, teachers, students and the general public, will focus on John Bingham (1815-1900), the Ohio congressman who was the principal framer of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The event will be held at the School of Law and Martin University Center on the UA campus. The program will offer scholarly reflections on the meaning of the 14th Amendment, which defined Americans' guaranteed rights, including privileges and immunities of citizenship, due process and equal protection. “This symposium will illuminate many of the current issues regarding equality, race and citizenship through a discussion of the real meaning and impact of the Reconstruction Era, both as a cautionary tale and as a history that continues to affect Americans today,” according to Elizabeth Reilly, School of Law associate dean and research fellow with the Center for Constitutional Law. Kimberlé Crenshaw, professor of law at Columbia Law School and the UCLA School of Law, will present the keynote address. Others speakers will include Dr. Paul Finkelman, Chapman Distinguished Chair, University of Tulsa College of Law; Michael Kent Curtis, professor of law, Wake Forest University School of Law; and Yoshimitsu Miyakawa, director, Center for American Studies, Nanzan University, Japan. The event is being sponsored by the University's Center for Constitutional Law, Office of Multicultural Development and Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. This two-day program is being presented at no cost to participants through the support of the John and Geraldine Stoller Fund and the Ohio Humanities Council. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit is available for attorneys and judges. The cost of the CLE credit is $100.
