Green Space

Coleman Commons master plan Following an Aug. 14, 2008, groundbreaking ceremony, construction has begun on Coleman Commons. The outdoor living space is being created next to the Student Union through the generosity of Kathy Coleman in memory of her late husband, Lester E. Coleman.

The transformation of The University of Akron is not limited to new and renovated buildings. We've got an additional 34 acres of green space to make the campus feel more like a park in the midst of its metropolitan setting.

Other changes include the closing of much of Carroll Street. In its place is a walkway that leads from the center of campus to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, and a large cul-de-sac between the Student Union and Lee Jackson Field. The right-of-way between Sumner and Union streets is a pedestrian mall.
Marlene and William Muse walk near the newly dedicated William V. Muse Clock and Garden.

Dr. William V. Muse, UA's 12th president, was honored on Aug. 15, 2008, with the dedication of the William V. Muse Clock and Garden, located at the corner of Buchtel Avenue and Spicer Street. Muse, seen here with wife, Marlene, is best known for his cooperative efforts with the city. The gift was made possible by UA alumnus and longtime benefactor, Dr. Paul E. Martin.
