New Student Convocation is the first academic event of each year and serves as the official welcome event at The University of Akron for new students. 

2011 Speakers include

• Provost Dr. W. Michael "Mike" Sherman
• Vice President for Student Engagement and Success, Dr. Charles Fey
• Outstanding Teacher/Mentor of First-Year Students Award Recipient, Dr. Janet Bean 
• Associated Student Government President, Miss Mary Beth Clemons

Afterward families enjoyed a Welcome Celebration on Coleman Common, sponsored by the Division of Student Engagement and Success.
