Health Insurance The University of Akron requires that all international students and visiting scholars/researchers who are taking classes to purchase major medical health insurance. J visa holders are also required to purchase catastrophic insurance for him/herself, each dependent and spouse living with him/her in the United States.
The University of Akron offers an insurance plan for those who do not have health insurance. Information and enrollment forms for this plan may be obtained at the information center in the Office of International Programs and Student Health Services.
You do not have to purchase The University of Akron's major medical student health insurance. However, you are required to have major medical health insurance which is comparable to that offered by The University of Akron. You must be covered by major medical health insurance for the full semester that you are attending. In order to register for classes, it is necessary to submit proof of major medical health insurance to the Office of International Programs via E-mail: oip-insurance@uakron.edu , fax :(330)972-8604 or in person (Polsky 483). Embassy sponsored students are required to bring the health insurance card which was issued by his/her embassy or bring in an official copy of the letter from the embassy, certifying that he/she is being sponsored by them.
Visiting Scholars/Researchers who are temporary employees of The University of Akron should contact their respective departments to make sure that a Personnel Action Form (PAF) has been completely processed. If a student is on Optional Practical Training, he/she must show proof that the employer provides health insurance.

List of Insurance Companies currently accepted by the University of Akron Minimum insurance requirements The insurance policy you hold must meet or exceed the following requirements:
- Basic Accidents and Sickness: J-1 visa holders and any accompanying spouse and dependents on a J visa status are required to have a $50,000 minimum coverage which includes catastrophic medical insurance. F visa holders must have a $15,000 minimum coverage for themselves only, catastrophic insurance is not required.
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment: A person's injury resulting in loss of life or members(means hand,foot, or eye).
- Repatriation (Preparation and Transportation of Remains): Preparation and transportation of remains to your city or permanent residence. Repatriation coverage should be no less than $7,500.
- Medical Evacuation: Transportation to your city of permanent residence as a result of injury or sickness. The minimum coverage acceptable for medical evacuation is $10,000.
- Deductible: The policy can have no more than a $500 deductible. |
