H1 Visa Information
Instructions For Applying For An H-1 Visa
In order to get started with the H-1b process, the H-1B Visa Request Form must be completed by the requesting department and returned to The Office of International Programs at The Polsky building, Room 483, +3101. Click here to download H-1 Visa Request Form. Upon receipt of the above mention document, there are four major steps involved in the H-1B1 application process.

The First Step
The first step entails the determination of the prevailing wage for the position that the H-1B1 beneficiary is being considered. Please complete H-1prevailingwage application form and return it to the Office of International Programs (zip +3101) along with a list of comparable positions and associated wages.
Note: Suggested D.O.T. code under item 4 should be left blank.

Also the H1 Applicant must complete H-1B Visa Request Form for Beneficiary.

Second Step
The second step is the ordering of the checks necessary to accompany the I-129 form. The current filing fee is $320. There is also a $500 anti-fraud fee for first time or transfer H-1b applicants. Applicants holding an H-1b and requesting an extension here at Univ. of Akron, do not need to pay the $500 anti-fraud fee. Please order Seperate checks made payable to the: U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As of 04/02/07, the new address will be: CALIFORNIA SERVICE CENTER, LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA (See the Departmental Letter for complete address). I recommend requesting “pick up” when ordering these checks as it save considerable time and these check must be sent with the I-129 packet.
Please deliver the checks to The Office of International Programs, Attention Dr.David Ayers, The Polsky Building, Room 483, Akron, OH 44325-3101.
The Third Step
The third step is the completion of a department letter. A sample of the department letter is provided and needs to be submitted with the petition. Please note that the department letter must include a description of the beneficiary's duties, hours of work and salary. Also, indicate that the employment fits within the six-year limitation of total H-1B1 employment, and that the employer will cancel the beneficiary's employment upon expiration of the authorized period of stay. The Fourth Step
The fourth step involves collecting the required supporting documentation from the beneficiary. Please forward the following checklist of items to the beneficiary. He/She must provide these items to the Office of International Programs to be included in the H-1B1 application:
1. Copy of the letter of offer given to the beneficiary regarding the proposed employment
2. Copy of the letter (or signature) of acceptance received from the beneficiary.
3. Copy of all diplomas received by the beneficiary IF NOT IN ENGLISH THEY MUST BE TRANSLATED AND CERTIFIED BY THE TRANSLATOR
4. Beneficiary’s Resume
5. Copy of first page of selected publications authored by the beneficiary indicating journal name and author’s name
6. Photocopy of beneficiary’s current immigration documents (i.e. passport picture and expiration page, visa stamp, I-94, I-797 approval notices (if applicable).
Please mail or hand deliver the above requested documents to: Dr.David Ayers, Director, Office of International Programs, The Polsky Building, Room 483, Akron, Ohio 44325-3101.
7 . Note: Please note that H-1B1 petitions can take up to 4 months to be adjudicated at the immigration service center. You can request The U.S. Department of Homeland Security to expedite the application for an additional $1,000 fee,using a seperate check payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.(Premium processing cases are adjudicated in 15 days)
8. Note: Should the Researcher/Scholar depart from the University of Akron, the Departments should complete the ( Departure of Researcher/Scholar Form H1B )and mail to: Dr.David Ayers, Director, Office of International Programs, The Polsky Building, Room 483, Akron, Ohio 44325-3101.
