Education Abroad Program Financial Aid Financial aid is available for students who participate in the Study Abroad Program and who qualify for Federal Student Aid. However, before aid eligibility can be determined, you must first be approved by the Office of International Programs (located in Polsky, Room 483) or the dean of your college if you plan on participating in a program off campus.
How eligibility is determined? Your financial aid award will be determined by many different factors. You must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal Application (if you have a current FAFSA on file). After completion of the application process, individual annual budgets will be developed by combining "reasonable expenses" for each specific program, the amount of time spent at the host institution, and registration at The University of Akron during the alternate semester. Covered expenses Reasonable expenses include tuition and related fees, room and board, books and supplies, and ground and air transportation. How to apply for financial aid? Students wishing to apply for financial aid should follow normal financial aid application procedures.
- January/February: file your Renewal or FAFSA. You may miss out on some types of aid if you apply after March 1st (see Websites)
- March: continuing student scholarship applications are due April 1st (see Websites).
- Be sure to complete and return all documents you receive from the Office of Student Financial Aid as soon as possible.
- Due to federal and university regulations, aid is not disbursed until ten days prior to the first day of the start of the University of Akron semester. You should submit a copy of your financial aid award proposal to the Office of International Programs for financial consideration.
- If you will be participating in a summer (or Intersession) abroad program, you should contact the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible to explore your aid options.
