Financial aid is available for students who participate in the Study Abroad Program and who qualify for Federal Student Aid. However, before aid eligibility can be determined, you must first be approved by the Office of International Programs (located in Polsky, room 483) or the dean of your college if you plan on participating in a program off campus.
Your financial aid award will be determined by many different factors. You must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal Application (if you have a current FAFSA on file). After completion of the application process, individual annual budgets will be developed by combining "reasonable expenses" for each specific program, the amount of time spent at the host institution and registration at The University of Akron during the alternate semester.
Reasonable expenses include tuition and related fees, room and board, books and supplies and ground and air transportation.
A FAFSA must be on file, and all necessary verification documents must be submitted prior to determining an award. Funding of your Study Abroad experience may come from the following sources:
*can only be used for University of Akron sponsored programs
If you plan to participate in Study Abroad through another institution as a transient student, you will be required to complete an Ad Hoc Consortium Agreement. (Pick this form up in the Office of Student Financial Aid). Please be aware that campus-based aid and University of Akron Scholarships cannot be used during a transient term.
