Located on the northern coast of the Netherlands, Groningen is young city. Half of its approximately 185,000 residents are under 35, and the city hosts more than 35,000 students. As a university city, there is much offered in the way of culture, the arts and nightlife. The city is also surrounded by an ecologically rich environment, with the Wadden Sea and the forests of Drenthe easily accessible. Most of the city is free of cars, and many residents travel by bicycle regularly.
Hanzehogeschool Groningen was founded in 1986 with the merger of several smaller institutions, some of which date as far back as 1798. Today, the university’s 20 schools offer 22 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines.
