

The University of Akron recycles all plastics, aluminum and steel cans, batteries, books, cardboard and chipboard, cell phones and other handheld devices, other electronics including computers, cameras, televisions, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, gift cards, glass bottles, large appliances, ink jet and toner cartridges, motor oil, paper products including magazines, telephone books, and newspapers, packing peanuts and other Styrofoam, ferrous and nonferrous metals, pallets, paint, and wood.
Plastics containing food or beverages should be rinsed and placed into any marked recycling bin accepting plastics. Molded plastics and Styrofoam can be recycled by request. Plastic recycling bins can be found in several locations, including; academic buildings, athletic complexes, and in other common areas. In addition, there are two large recycling receptacles designated for plastics 1&2, glass, steel cans and aluminum cans located in parking lot 29.
Glass bottles containing food or beverages should be rinsed. After the bottles have been rinsed, lids should be removed. They may then be placed into any recycling container accepting glass and/or plastic bottles. Glass and/or plastic recycling bins can be found in several locations, including; academic buildings, athletic complexes, and in other common areas. In addition, there are two large recycling receptacles designated for plastics 1&2, glass, steel cans and aluminum cans located in parking lot 29.
Paper, magazines, phonebooks, and newspaper should be placed into the large blue recycling totes designated for paper. These paper totes are emptied once a week on either Wednesday or Friday and are located in most buildings on campus. An 8 yd recycling dumpster designated for all paper products has been staged on the East side of the Auburn Science Center for community drop-offs.
Cell phones and palm pilots may be recycled by request or dropped off on the third floor of the College of Arts and Science. All cell phones are donated to local women’s shelters. However, if the materials are surplus property please contact Central Stores for recycling instructions.
Electronics and appliances may be recycled by request. If the materials are surplus property please contact Central Stores for recycling instructions.
Cardboard, both corrugated and chip board, may be placed in gay-lord boxes located at the shipping/receiving entrances of most buildings. The University of Akron utilizes two cardboard balers located at the Student Union and Infocision stadium.
Ferrous and nonferrous metals may be placed in the appropriate container located in parking lot 29.
All other materials are recycled on an as needed basis. To schedule a pick up for such materials, contact a representative from the recycling department.
