The year long program requires that participants make a commitment  to attend a three-hour seminar once a month, complete a leadership self-assessment, develop a leadership development plan, read required texts, complete a group project that connects them to varied aspects of the university, and give a presentation about the their experiences (i.e. "Getting Connected" project in Appendix C).

Throughout the year-long program participants reflect on their learning experiences through journaling.  Classes are led by a group of ALF faculty from the Council of Deans and guest faculty who hold expertise about university strategic initiatives and operations.

Topics addressed include: Principles of Leadership; The University of Akron Structure, Governance, and Mission; Higher Education Budgeting and Finance; Human Resources and Inclusive Excellence as Cornerstones; Communications, Strategic Planning and Environmental Scanning.  The impact of student success is interwoven into all discussions.  In addition the content is arranged so that the participants initially gather an understanding of leadership within self.  The focus then commences to leadership with the arena of the university community.  The progression continues to leadership trends and issues within the community at large.  There are compelling discussions to assist participants in their integration of information so that they may more effectively lead from their positions of influence.
