Student Learning Assessment

The University is preparing for a Higher Learning Commission visit in Spring 2015.  Part of this visit is to address assessment of student learning.  The goal is to "assure that graduate and undergraduate academic majors and the general education program have assessment processes in place that include (a) the skills and concepts mastered, (b) the assessment measures employed, and (c) the analysis and use of results to improve academic programs." 

Assessment Implementation to include:

  • Explicitly stating what students should know and be able to do for each degree program
  • Collecting student work as evidence of that learning
  • Analyzing the student work to search for gaps in learning
  • Making changes to programs as warranted

Timeline:

  • Taskforce formed (Oct. 2013)
  • Review learning statements (Oct. 2013)
  • Data collection plans complete (Nov. 2013)
  • Collect data for one-quarter of outcomes (Spring 2014)
    • Continue data collection over a 2-year period
  • Analyze data and act on findings (Spring 2014)
  • Assessment report to deans (Fall 2014)
  • Implement changes as warranted (Fall 2014)
  • Report to Higher Learning Commission (Fall 2014)
  • Higher Learning Commission visit (Spring 2015)
