The Army Research Institute will soon have 4 new positions opening at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. Aberdeen is approximately 40 minutes north of Baltimore, MD, 45 mins from Wilmington, DE, and 60 mins from Philadelphia, PA. Aberdeen is in the Washington Pay Area, and has the same salary levels that our scientists in Washington DC have.

We are looking for young researchers to fill entry level (GS-12) and journeyman (GS-13) positions in our unit cohesion/effectiveness team, cross-cultural and basic research teams (descriptions of each are provided below).

The general types of backgrounds we're seeking are (in no particular order): individual differences/tests & measurement, social network analysis, neuroscience/psychophysiology/experimental psychology, cognitive science, social psychology/sociology (focus more on groups and teams); organizational behavior; cross-cultural interaction (psychological/communications/sociology background but must be good on quantitative methods). They must be U.S. citizens (no wiggle room, Uncle Sam enforces that rule).

Although we typically only consider those with PhD's in hand, we have access to the 'Student Career Experience Program' (SCEP)and can hire on ABD folks as GS-11s, and they are non-competitively promoted to GS-12 (our entry level) upon completion of their degree.

The Research Teams:

Basic Research -- This team executes the basic research program. We've got a large portfolio of contracts with academic researchers and applied research organizations (25-28+) that this team manages. However, they will also have responsibilities for a) maintaining regular contact with the team leaders/unit chiefs in the applied research units to facilitate transition of basic research findings to the applied units; b) cultivating relationships with the research community within each of the basic research domains (personnel, training, leader, organization); c) executing basic research projects in house and; d) identifying new research topics on the scientific horizon for investment.

Cross-cultural -- The basic focus here is on identifying the fundamental skills/capabilities required for Soldiers to effectively work with individuals from other cultures, no matter where they are deployed. The primary focus is on national/ethnic cultures, but the work should generalize to organizational cultures, regional cultures, etc.

Unit Cohesion/Effectiveness -- The near-term focus here is on developing the means to assess unit cohesion through non-obtrusive measures, and to find a way to integrate cohesion measurement into the Army Readiness systems. The longer term focus is on definition and assessment of unit effectiveness at battalion levels and below - readiness, cohesion, combat effectiveness, unit effectiveness, effectiveness of collective training strategies, and impacts of different unit manning strategies among others.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities of this position include supporting and executing consulting project activities. This includes developing content for client solutions (e.g., test items) and other project-related materials, writing technical documentation, summarizing materials for litigation support, and conducting and reporting statistical analyses. Individuals in this position also facilitate various types of focus groups. Consultants communicate with consulting team members to delegate project-related activities and may work directly with clients to discuss project-related issues.

Candidate Profile

Ph.D. or Masters Degree in industrial-organizational psychology or related discipline

One to two years of I-O or HR-related consulting, corporate or internship experience

Strong customer focus, project management, interpersonal, communication and writing skills

Experience with executing multi-faceted projects in one or more of the following areas: job analysis, selection and assessment, performance management, survey research or training and development

Experience with statistical software packages (e.g. SPSS, SAS)
