Course Numbers

In addition to pinpointing the precise course involved, course numbers tell at what level the course is being taught or at what point in a student's career the student is ready to take the course. The following chart will assist you in interpreting the numbering system:
  • 100 - 199 First year level courses
  • 200 - 299 Second year level courses
  • 300 - 399 Third year level courses
  • 400 - 499 Fourth year level courses
  • 500 - 699 Master's level courses
  • 600 - 799 J.D. level courses
  • 700 - 899 Doctoral level courses
When approved undergraduate courses are offered for graduate credit, they are designated as 500-level courses. A student may not enroll in or receive credit for graduate courses (500 numbers and up) unless admitted to or granted permission by the dean of the Graduate School.
