Selective Service Registration and In-State Tuition

Section 3345.32 of the Ohio Revised Code became effective September 25, 1986. It makes students who are required to register with the U.S. Selective Service and have not done so, ineligible for various State of Ohio financial aid programs and requires they be charged the out-of-state tuition. All males between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to register except: those on active duty with the armed forces of the United States (other than training with a reserve or national guard unit); nonimmigrant aliens lawfully in the U.S. in accordance with Section 101(A)(15) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act; and permanent residents of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or Northern Mariana Islands who are not U.S. Citizens.

The State of Ohio requires The University of Akron to determine registration status in order to properly assess fees and determine eligibility for state financial aid programs. Students may register for selective service in the year they become 18 and must have registered within 30 days after their 18th birthday. They may register in any U.S. Post Office or on the web at: http://www.sss.gov/.

It is a student's responsibility to provide the University Registrar's office with their Selective Service Registration number. Failure to do so will result in the assessment of the Selective Service surcharge (which is the same amount as non-resident fees). Students are expected to make full payment (including the Selective Service surcharge) by their appropriate payment due date. Payment deadlines may not be waived or extended while a student's residency status is under review or while you are waiting to receive your selective service registration number.

The Office of the University Registrar will notify those who, according to the Selective Service Office, have not complied with the law and ask for a statement from the student verifying his selective service status.
