This is the first of a Brown Bag lunch series showcasing researchers, current research projects and research-related issues at UA and our surrounding area. Suggestions for topics and presenters are welcome and should be directed to Mary Dingler.

Bring your lunch and meet Dr. Youngs at this Brown Bag, learn about his current research endeavors, and show your support of one of your colleagues.

Wiley Youngs is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry; Director of the Center for Silver Therapeutics Research; Director of the X-Ray Crystallographic Facility; professor, Integrated Bioscience Program; and a Research Associate, Institute of Polymer Science.

His current research involves the development of new silver based antimicrobials for nebulization into the lung to combat bacterial lung infections; the formation of PLGA-PEG and LTP nanoparticles containing silver carbene complexes for the treatment of systemic bacterial infections; the formation of PLGA-PEG and LTP nanoparticles with targeting groups such as folate on the surface for the treatment of cancers; and the development of phosphazene polymers as proton conducting membrane materials for hydrogen fuel cells.

Dawn Johnson joined the UA Psychology faculty in August 2008. Her research interests include intimate partner violence, PTSD, trauma and abuse, and treatment outcome research. She currently has funding from NIMH supporting her research on the treatment of PTSD in recently abused women living in domestic violence shelters.

Dr. Lowery, through the UA Nutrition Center, collaborates with UA Athletics, to provide sports nutrition services to UA athletes. He is also a registered dietician. His research involves sports nutrition and nutrient timing; body composition changes; proteins, lipids and physiological responses; and the biological recovery from stress/insult.
