With 37 new U.S. patents filed, 71 invention disclosures and $6.3 million in licensing revenue in 2007 alone, The University of Akron ranks first in the state of Ohio in return per research dollar spent. Akron’s advantage lies in creative and talented faculty, staff and students, as well as a nationally recognized research foundation that facilitates licensing, collaboration and new venture creation through an open and easy process.

With over 100 U.S. patents to his credit, Dr. Joseph Kennedy has discovered yet another high performance isobutylene based polymer. He has more recently invented a polyisobutylene-based polyurethane composition which demonstrates superior oxidative resistance over any known biomaterial in the field. |

Inspired by the tiny foot hairs that allow geckos to run up walls and across ceilings, Dr. Ali Dhinojwala fixed aligned carbon nanotubes to flexible plastic to create a synthetic tape that can support four times more shear stress than a gecko’s foot. Unlike typical adhesives, the gecko tape could be used underwater or in outer space. |

Dr. Wiley Youngs’ diverse research activities cover metal-based antimicrobials and anti-cancer drugs, polymeric membranes for fuel cells and cage systems based on metal compounds. A new type of compound, known as silver N-heterocyclic carbene complexes or SCCs, has bacteria-fighting properties, effectively treating lung infections in an animal study. |

FirstEnergy made a $2 million pledge to UA to establish an Advanced Energy Research Center. The program will pioneer carbon capture and energy projects, including Dr. Steven Chuang's coal fuel cell, pictured at left, which is twice as efficient as coal burning power plants and easily captures carbon dioxide and harmful emissions. |
