Living Learning Communities Welcome to Living and Learning at The University of Akron !What are Living-Learning Communities? Living-Learning Communities are established to provide distinctive settings where student academic success is supported through residential experiences. Living-Learning Communities bring academics into the residence halls through on-site classes, advising and referral services, tutors, and special opportunities to interact with faculty. The goal of our Living-Learning Communities is four-fold:
- Provide special attention to first-year students while offering mentoring opportunities to upperclassmen
- Focus on academic achievement in a productive and supportive setting
- Foster the joining of the scholarly and social aspects of student life
- Promote collaboration among faculty, staff and students
What are the benefits? Recent national studies have emphasized the unique potential for Living-Learning Communities to positively impact student success and retention. Not only do students perform better in class, but they feel more connected to their peers, the faculty and the University, and as a result, are more likely to return the next year. Likewise, Living-Learning Communities allow you to:
- Access an enhanced residential experience through specialized programs
- Experience increased faculty and staff contact outside the classroom
- Experience greater academic support opportunities
- Foster a greater connection to the University
- Build lifetime friendships

• Emerging Leaders Community
The Emerging Leaders Program is based on an application process in which 84 first-year students are chosen to partake on a journey of self-development and personal growth as they are emerged within the campus community as student leaders. Selected upon applications reviewed in the Spring, students are chosen who exemplify themselves as strong and enthusiastic individuals with a passion for growth, new experiences, leadership, and a longing for community. Living in the resident halls, Emerging Leaders either reside in Ritchie Hall or potentially the Honors Complex. Nationally recognized as the 2008 CAACURH Community of the Year and recipient of the 2009 APCA Student Leadership Development Award, the Program integrates and acclimates students to the University through: academics, mentoring, and involvement. As a community, the Emerging Leaders set the bar for future students from the contributions they make to the campus community through programs, leadership, and service. • Nursing: Living, Learning and Leading - NL3
Located on floors seven and eight of Spanton Hall, the NL3 Community is designed to provide pre-nursing students, intended nursing majors, and students in the nursing major frequent occasions for collaboration, support and enrichment. Special sessions with study facilitators, nursing student leaders, and college faculty and staff will enrich learning opportunities, increase motivation for academic excellence, and promote participation in scholarly and leadership activities. It is our expectation that the expanded opportunity for mentoring and peer support and the special programming will increase student academic achievement and satisfaction in the nursing major. Most importantly nursing students in the living learning community will develop a close connection with the College of Nursing to enhance the skills and attitudes needed to actively participate in and shape the future of professional nursing.
