The BIG Move! It's time ...
Moving to campus involves a lot of details. You need to decide what to take, and what to leave at home. You'll need to get stuff for your campus room. You can contact your future roommate and coordinate plans, so you don't start the semester with two stereos, two fish tanks and no television. And now that you've got your room assignment, you should start giving friends and family your campus mailing address. This summer will fly by, and suddenly Move-In Day will be just a week or two away. So a few plans and actions now will help assure a smooth landing in your new life in August.
GETTING YOUR head TOGETHER
The first thing you need to prepare is your attitude. If you grasp the basic concepts behind residence hall living, the transition will be easier.
Residence hall living is a bit like independent living with a safety net. New liberties, but also new rules. More freedom, more responsibility. On Move-In Day you'll receive a handbook that details residence hall do's and don'ts. For now, here are some topics that help illustrate the general ideas:
GETTING YOUR stuff TOGETHER
Packing for college is a balancing act. On one hand, you'll need things we take for granted at home ... bed linens and laundry supplies, computer, microwave, telephone, TV/VCR, etc. On the other hand, your room has limited space. That means being selective in the "extras" you bring along, especially those that take up space.
If home is no more than an hour or two from campus, a good plan is to take just essentials you'll need for the first month or so. Then as you and your new roommate adjust to your environnment and each other, you can decide what additional things to bring from home.
Also, you won't have as much closet/dresser space as you did at home, so be practical about your clothing. Akron's daytime temperatures range into the 80s through early October, so you can avoid packing the parka and wool hats for now.
If you won't return home for several months, or if you're planning to travel by air or bus and thus have little storage, advance planning becomes even more critical.
This publication includes a list of "What To Bring." Make a photocopy or two of this list, keeping the original as a master list. Take the photocopies with you as you shop or borrow, then use the master as a check-off list as you pack.
Once again, we suggest contacting your future roommate to coordinate what each of you will bring.
move-in DAY
Moving into the residence hall can be exciting, confusing and hectic. Or it can be really crazy. Once again, just a few well-made plans can help ensure you get a great start to your new life on campus.
On the opposite side of the "What to Bring" list is another list, "What To Do on Move-In Day." This checklist can help make Move-In Day a lot smoother.
CHANGE OF address
It's a good idea to give friends and family your new mailing address during the summer. Your mail will be delivered to your residence hall, but packages delivered by most carriers (U.S. Express Mail, FedEx, UPS, etc.) will be sent to DocuZip in the Student Union, and you'll be notified to pick it up. DocuZip will only accept packages for those students who reside on campus. Please be sure to avoid using pet names or aliases as those names do not appear in our listing.
Address Format:
Student Name

Residence Hall/Room Number
P.O. Box 1350
