Update regarding the H1N1 (swine) flu

Posted Oct. 18, 2009

UA continues to closely monitor flu activity on campus and encourages all to take steps to help prevent the spread of the virus.

As of Oct. 18, the University has learned of two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus. Both students are recovering off campus.

UA’s Student Health Services continues to report elevated rates of people reporting flu-like symptoms for this time of year. This mirrors what the City of Akron Health Department is seeing across the broader community and what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting nationally.

See details on our flu information page.

Police: Hints to help prevent theft

badgePosted Oct. 1, 2009

Like any community, UA receives reports of theft from time to time. UA’s police department, which operates 24-7 to protect campus and nearby student neighborhoods, offers these tips to help prevent theft:

  • Don’t leave books and valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. This includes that GPS unit attached to your windshield.
  • Lock vehicle doors and roll up windows. Many thefts are crimes of opportunity, and most could be easily prevented.
  • If your car is one valued by car thieves, consider installing an anti-theft device, an alarm or a vehicle-recovery system. Police across the region report that Hondas made between 1992 and 2000 are being targeted right now.
  • If you notice someone walking in a UA parking deck or lot, looking into car windows, let UA’s police department know. Call the department at 330-972-2911 at any hour.
  • Likewise, report to UAPD any car alarms that you hear going off.

By following these tips and by notifying our police any time you notice something unusual, you’ll be helping yourself and others.
