SECTION I
The name of the organization shall be The University of Akron Women in Higher Education.
SECTION II
Purposes
- The organization shall provide support in a visible way for the advancement of women at The University of Akron and at any other institution of higher education.
- The organization shall promote the professional development of women by providing information on the availability of further formal education, by promoting the attainment of qualifying credentials, by providing moral support for those pursuing further education, by sharing resources for personal and professional growth, and by providing job information to further the upward mobility of women.
- The organization shall provide avenues for interaction with new women employees.
- The organization shall provide information on resources concerning women, The University of Akron, and higher education.
- The organization shall continue to identify current university priorities and campus issues which impact on the working environment of its membership.
SECTION III
Membership
- Membership is open to all past and present personnel of The University of Akron, and their spouses, who have a concern about women's issues in higher education and who support the stated goals, objectives, and purposes of the organization.
- Membership shall not be restricted to women.
SECTION IV
Officers
- The officers shall be President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
- The President's duties shall include, but not be limited to, coordination of programming in addition to the duties usually associated with the title.
- The President-Elect's duties shall include, but not be limited to, assisting with the coordination of programming, coordination of public relations, and editing of the newsletter in addition to the duties usually associated with the title.
- The Vice President's duties shall include, but not be limited to, the coordination of membership recruitment, by-laws drafting and amendments, and the coordination of fund raising activities in addition to the duties usually associated with the title.
- The Secretary's duties shall include, but not be limited to, recording minutes of the meetings and handling all correspondence.
- The Treasurer's duties shall include, but not be limited to, the collection of dues, the maintenance of a membership list, and paying all bills.
- Each officer shall be elected annually by ballot at the April meeting.
- The Executive Committee shall consist of the President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee.
- The term of the office shall be one year. No officer may serve for more than two consecutive terms.
- The elected officers shall take office on May 1 and shall serve from May through the following April or until a successor takes office.
- Any vacancies occurring among the elected officers shall be filled by a special election at the next regular meeting.
- The membership shall be notified in writing of any vacancies occurring among the elected officials by the Executive Committee.
SECTION V
Meetings
- Scheduled meetings may be held monthly, September through April: a quorum at a regular monthly meeting shall be a majority of the members present.
- Special meetings shall be convened at the call of the President. A quorum at a special meeting shall be 50 percent of the current membership.
SECTION VI
Dues
- The annual dues shall be established by the Executive Committee at the regular April meeting; dues shall be collected in September.
- No name shall be entered on the membership list until dues have been paid.
- Any member three months in arrears shall be dropped from the membership list after notice.
SECTION VII
Standing Committees
- The Standing Committees shall be: Membership, Programming, and Strategic Planning.
- The members of the Strategic Planning Committee shall be composed of the current President, the immediate Past President and the two members selected at large by the present Executive Committee. The Chairperson shall sit on the Executive Committee.
- The Programming and Membership Committees shall be appointed by the President.
- The Membership Chairperson shall be responsible for coordinating the Membership Committee activities. The Committee shall maintain the membership directory, promote the organization, and perform other duties relating to membership.
- The Programming Chairperson shall be responsible for coordinating the Programming Committee activities. The Committee shall present program recommendations to the Executive Committee for approval.
SECTION VIII
Amendments to the By-Laws
These By-Laws may be amended by the affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members in attendance at a meeting provided that advance notice has been given.
