Overview of the Marriage & Family Counseling/ Therapy Track


The mission of the Counselor Education & Supervision: Marriage & Family Counseling/Therapy (MFC/T) track is to train students to become advanced practitioners, teachers/supervisors, and researchers in the field of marriage and family therapy.  Training is based on a relational view of life in which an understanding and respect for diversity and non-discrimination are fundamentally addressed, practiced, and valued.


The MFC/T doctoral track is dually accredited by COAMFTE and CACREP.  Only a select few universities in the nation offer this type of accreditation.  Dual accreditation means that upon graduation students have met the current standards in the field of marriage and family therapy and counseling.  This type of accreditation insures marketability in a much broader ranges of employment opportunities.  For those who are not licensed, with appropriate coursework, students can also sit for the Ohio licensure exams to become Marriage & Family Therapists and/or Professional Counselors.

Addressing the Needs of the State and the Region

Student enrollment has remained relatively steady over the past few years reflecting the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics report projecting faster than average growth in counseling positions at both the master’s and doctoral level through 2012 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2004-05 Edition). Growth in Ohio is expected to parallel the national picture as reflected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics report.  The Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy doctoral program addresses this need by offering a high quality nationally accredited program for marriage and family therapist/educators to work in Ohio and across the nation.

Placement Objectives for Graduates

  • A primary objective is that each marriage and family graduate will utilize their advanced level clinical skills, supervision training, teaching abilities, and capacity to do research to contribute to the advancement of the profession of marriage and family therapy.
  • Continue to be involved in the activities of AAMFT and IAMFC, and if desired seek clinical membership and AAMFT Approved Supervisor status.
  • Successfully find employment as teachers in academia, mental health administrators, supervisors, researchers, and advanced level clinicians in settings such as universities and schools, mental health agencies, hospitals and settings in which there is a primary focus on advanced level skills in the marriage and family profession.
