Application Process

Admission to the College of Education is NOT a prerequisite for admission to the ATEP!  See details below.

The Athletic Training Education Program requires a separate admissions process.  Students must apply and be admitted into the Clinical Education Program (This includes all clinical rotations and major coursework). Upon successful completion of the program prerequisites (see below), a student should submit an application for admission into the Athletic Training Education Program. Admission occurs once a year in the spring semester for fall semester admittance. Applications must be submitted to the ATEP Program Director by May 1st of the spring semester. Transfer students will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The application process consists of the following:
Coursework Prerequisites

A grade of "C" or better is required on the following courses:

  • Completion of Human Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab
  • Completion of Human Anatomy & Physiology II and Lab
  • Completion of First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Completion of Introduction to Athletic Training
  • Completion of (or enrollment in) Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries and Lab

    GPA Requirement

    • Minimum requirement is 2.5 overall GPA

    Recommendation Letters

    • Two typewritten letters are required
    • One of the letters MUST come from a University of Akron faculty member
    • Both letters must be submitted to the ATEP Program Director in a signed and sealed envelope by May 1
    • These letters will not be available for review by the applicant. Letters should be submitted to the following address:

    • The faculty of the Athletic Training Education Program will schedule formal interviews following the application deadline. (The interviews typically take place during finals week of the spring semesters.) Please do not call to arrange an interview unless you have first been contacted. ONLY those applicants who meet the admission requirements will be interviewed.

    Completion of the application process DOES NOT guarantee the applicant a formal interview or admission into the Athletic Training Education Program.

    College of Education Admission

    Students who enter the ATEP will also need to apply to the College of Education. Please note, admission to the College of Education is NOT a prerequisite for admission to the ATEP. However, students will need to be admitted to the COE by the end of their first year in the Clinical Education program.
