InfoCision Stadium Summa Field On Schedule
AKRON, Ohio – All are excited around campus with InfoCision Stadium/Summa Field going up just behind the Stile Athletic Field House. A lot of progress has been made thus far and construction is still on schedule, despite the winter weather that Ohio received.
“There are at least five homes that are scheduled for demolition for this week,” UA Associate Athletics Director for Facilities Paul Hammond said. “Nash Street has been completely shut down and we are in the process of taking it out.
“Caissons are being put in place, which is the foundation where the steel will be placed on top of the concrete,” Hammond said. “We are moving right along and are definitely on schedule.”
“Working through the winter was not easy but it was successful,” UA Vice President of Capital Planning & Facilities Management Ted Curtis said. “The site we are working on had good drainage and, even with all the rain, snow and ice, we were able to move 75,000 cubic yards of dirt off the site.
“You can expect to see structural steel around June or July,” Curtis said, “which will support the press box tower that will be 120 feet tall.”
“Demolition of properties will continue as will excavation of the area,” Hammond said. "The concrete wall is being constructed on the East side up until where the southern part of the 20 yard line will be.”
Zips will open InfoCision Stadium Summa Field on September 19, 2009 against Indiana University.
