After 15 dormant years, Phi Kappa Psi came back on the University of Akron campus in the fall of 2012. Since then we have initiated 12 focused and dedicated men that believe in the ideals of our fraternity. As our first appearance in Greek life, we participated in Lip Jam put on by Alpha Gamma Delta and received the award for Best Choreography. In the fall semester three of our members were put on the Dean’s list and collectively, our members received over $6,000 in scholarship money.
In the of spring semester 2013 we recorded 145 study hours and more than 200 hours of community service and philanthropy. We have started and plan to continue our relationship with the Boys and Girls Club in the Akron area and volunteer our time to help the children of our community. In February we celebrated our Founders Day with our nationally recognized alumni group, the Rubber City Alumni Association. With their support and in honor of their hard work and dedication to Phi Kappa Psi, we plan to continue some of their traditions.
In March we co-hosted a charity concert with Alpha Gamma Delta to raise money for our respective charities. The event rose over $1100 and the two organizations split the proceeds to donate to the Boys and Girls Club and the Alpha Gamma Delta foundation to fight diabetes. Later that month, some of the members volunteered to build a new towpath trail in Zoar, Ohio as a part of the Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail. The people on the project were very thankful of our effort to help them enhance their community. In April we also had a team of members at the Relay for Life on the University of Akron campus.
It is an amazing experience being a part of Greek life on the University of Akron campus. We look forward to growing and becoming more involved in the fall of 2013. As always, we are glad to be here and proud to be Phi Psis.
