Social Justice Week | September

September 21-25

Week Long Donation Book Drive
Donate new and gently used books appropriate for infants, toddlers, pre-K, and kindergarten children throughout Social Justice Week to benefit Bright Star Books, a Greater Akron nonprofit. 61% of low-income children have no books of their own at home. This greatly impacts their ability to arrive at kindergarten ready for success. Help make a difference by dropping off books at the Center for Service and Leadership across from the Game Room on the first floor of the Student Union.

Drop In Service Event: Animal Toys
Monday, September 21 – 11am-1pm
Student Union, Lounge by Starbucks
Join us to create cat and dog toys for a local animal shelter. Even if you only have a few minutes in between class, it's a great way to give back if you are short on time.

Sexual Violence Bystander Training
Monday, September 21 – 11:15am-12:15pm
Student Union 308
Learn to recognize sexual violence and develop the skills to effectively and safely intervene to prevent acts of violence. Defined Lines, a student organization, will be facilitating this one hour training.

Want a reusable bag for free?! Learn to make a tote bag from an old t-shirt. You bring a t-shirt, we will show you the rest!

Zips for St. Jude In Service Event
Tuesday, September 22 – 12pm-1pm
Student Union, Lounge by Starbucks
Stop by the Piano Lounge near Starbucks to join Zips for St. Jude make craft kits and learn about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Voter Registration Day
Tuesday, September 22 – 2pm-3pm
Student Union, Lounge by Starbucks
Exercise your right! Learn about the importance and how to register to vote. Chat with student organizations and leaders about this relevant topic.

Volunteer Fair
Wednesday, September 23 – 11am-1pm
Student Union 2nd Floor Concourse
Want to find out how to get involved in the community? Stop by to meet and network with area community agencies and nonprofit organizations as well as serviced-focused student organizations. This is a great opportunity to work with a specific agency or a social justice isssue!

Drop In Service Event: Fleece Blankets
Thursday, September 24 – 11am-1pm
Student Union, Lounge by Starbucks
Stop by to help construct fleece tie blankets to those in need. They will be donated to individuals at a local homeless shelter.

Stop Hunger Now
Saturday, September 26 – 3pm-5pm
Student Union Ballroom
Super Service Saturdays provide a valuable volunteer experience in the Akron community. We will be packaging 10,000 meals with Stop Hunger Now whose mission is to end hunger by providing food and life changing aid.

Fall Volunteer Fair | September

Are you excited to get involved around the community but don’t know where to start? Check out serveAkron’s Fall Volunteer Fair on the Student Union 2nd Floor Concourse. Numerous agencies from the Akron area will be attending to provide more information on volunteer opportunities.

Opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

Cuts for a Cause | April

April 14, 2015

Cuts for a Cause is a hair donation event that benefits Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a program that collects ponytails to create wigs for females who have lost their hair due to cancer. At this event, a local salon will be cutting ponytails (a minimum of 8 inches), or receive a haircut for $5.
