A week long event held in November, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week brings greater attention to the difficulties that the homeless and hungry face on a daily basis and helps to promote the national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness.  Previous events include: Oxfam Hunger Banquet, canned-food drives, homeless speakers, and volunteer opportunities at the Akron-Canton Regional FoodBank.

All Week Events | November 14-19

Canned Food Drive
Center for Service and Leadership, 1st floor Student Union
Drop off canned food or non-perishable items to donate to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

SNAP Challenge
What is it really like to live on a food budget determined by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program? (formerly known as food stamps) To find out, serveAkron is bringing to campus the SNAP Challenge starting on Sunday, Nov. 13. The SNAP Challenge offers students, staff, and faculty a view of what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans who rely on food assistance on a daily basis. Participants will simulate what it is like to live on a food stamp budget ($4.50/ day) for food for the week. Register by clicking the button above! Monday | November 14

Drop-In Service: Fleece Scarves
11am-1pm, Student Union Trapezoid Lounge
Stop by to make a fleece scarf that will be donated to a local homeless shelter in the Akron community.

All In For Hunger
6pm-8pm, Student Union Ballrooms
Join ZPN and serveAkron for a night of poker, table games, slot machines, and a cash cube. For every two canned goods you will receive one raffle ticket. Over $2,000 worth of prizes will be raffled off.

Tuesday | November 15

Stop Hunger Now [RSVP]
7pm-9pm, Student Union Ballroom
Learn about Stop Hunger Now’s mission to end hunger by providing food and life changing aid and join us in packaging 10,000 meals!

Wednesday | November 16

Drop-In Service & Poverty Stimulation Activity
11am-1pm, Student Union Trapezoid Lounge
Stop by to participate in the poverty simulation game SPENT. This online game is about surviving poverty and homelessness for a month. Also, join us to construct fleece tie blankets to those in need. The blankets will be donated to individuals at a local homeless shelter.

Thursday | November 17

Weekday Service Event (RSVP)
7am-8:15am, Meet at St. Bernard’s Church
Come start the day off on the right foot! Help make sandwiches for the homeless bright and early near campus. All students will meet at the service location (44 University Ave, Akron, OH 44308).

Drop-In Service & Thankful Thursday
11am-1pm, Student Union Trapezoid Lounge
Help construct fleece tie blankets to those in need and participate in the weekly “Thankful Thursday” activity!

Men's Basketball Game
7pm, JAR Arena
Join us to support the men's basketball home opener! There will be bins to drop off canned goods and nonperishable items at the entrance. Do your part to support the team and those less fortunate!

Friday | November 18

Can Castle Competition [RSVP]
10am-12pm, Student Union Trapezoid Lounge
**12:30pm castles will be ranked by the judges. Gather up a team of organization members, or just a bunch of friends and show your creative side! Come build some architectural works of art made entirely out of non-perishable food items. At the end of the competition, all the cans/food items will be donated to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. A trophy will be given to this year’s winning team!

1pm-3pm, Habitat for Humanity Restore
** Meet at 12:30pm in the Student Union.
Volunteer your Friday afternoon helping the local homeless community.

Saturday | November 19

Super Service Saturday [RSVP]
11:30am–1:30pm, Project RISE-Akron Public Schools
**Meet at the Student Union Commuter Lounge at 11:00am.
Spend your Saturday morning giving back to the local community in Northeast Ohio. Volunteers will participate in the Love and Learn Doll Project by constructing handmade dolls, quilts, and tote bags that are paired with a storybook and educational activity guide. The dolls, tote bags, blankets and books will then be taken a local homeless shelter. Please RSVP at the button above!
