Technical Math

 

Technical Math Certificate (11 credit hours)

This certificate, requiring a minimum of 11 credit hours, is designed to develop technical mathematics knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge in an industrial setting. At least 6 of the 11 credit hours must be taken through Summit College with a grade point average of 2.5. The granting of this certificate does not require the completion of a degree.


Technical Mathematics Courses

2030:130 Mathematics for Allied Health (3 credits)
Prequisite: Placement Test.

The real number system, systems of measurement, conversions, linear equations, factoring, quadratic equations, graphing, linear systems, organizing data, averages, standard deviation, the normal distribution.

2030:151 Technical Math I (2 credits)
Prerequisite: Placement Test.

Fundamental concepts and operations, functions, graphs, factoring and algebraic fractions, variation, and quadratic equations.

2030:152 Technical Math II (2 credits)
Prerequisite: 151 with a grade of C- or better or placement test.

Trigonometric functions, systems of linear equations, determinants, trigonometric functions of any angle, the straight line, radians, the j-operator.

2030:153 Technical Math III (2 credits)
Prerequisite: 152 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better or placement test.

Complex fractions, exponents and radicals, binomial theorem, exponential and logarithmic functions. Arithmetic and geometric sequences, series optional.

2030:154 Technical Math IV (2 credits)
Prerequisite: 153 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better of placement test.

Graphs of trigonometric functions, complex numbers in polar form, trigonometric identities and equations, higher degree equations, analytic geometry of the straight line and conic sections.

2030:161 Mathematics for Modern Technology (4 credits)
Prerequisite: 151 with a grade of C- or better or placement by advisor.

Numeration systems. Analytical geometry of the straight line, linear system. Matrices and matrix methods, determinants. Sets and logic. Probability and statistics. Math of finance.

2030:255 Technical I (3 credits)
Prerequisite: 154 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better or placement test.

The derivative, applications of the derivative, derivatives of the trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. Integration by antidifferentiation.

2030:345 Technical Data Analysis (2 credits)
Prerequisite: 154 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better or placement test.

Data summarization including graphic presentation, numerical measures, introduction to probability, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Computer usage incorporated. For Summit College students only.

2030:356 Technical Calculus II (3 credits)
Prerequisite: 255 or equivalent with a grade of C- or better.

Methods and applications of integration, first and second order differential equations, series expansion. Laplace transforms, partial derivatives, and double integrals.

2030:290 Special Topics: Associate Studies Mathematics (1-4 credits)
Prerequisite: permission. (May be repeated with a change in topic.)

Selected topics on subject areas of interest in associate studies)

2030:290:001 Applications of Graphing Calculator (1 credit)

Introduction to the use of a graphing calculator as applied to mathematical and data analytic concepts. Analyze functions, plot graphs, and basic statistical problem solving via graphing calculators.
