Hospitality management student Juanita Bagley of Akron is one of the many UA students and alumni who will transform ice blocks into sculptures at the first-ever Ohio City Ice Festival March 4.
The University of Akron Ice Carving Team will once again take its show on the road, this time to the Ohio City Ice Carving Festival on March 4. The event begins at noon at the Market Garden, 1947 West 25th St., Cleveland.
The carvers, including UA alumnus Michael Berkowitz, Market Garden house manager, will create a series of sculptures out of ice blocks using chainsaws and carving tools.
The University's Ice Carving Team members travel across the country competing in ice sculpting contests and showcasing their talents at special events. Since its 1994 inception, the team has won four national ice carving competitions. Team members are coached by coach, Chef Richard Alford, associate professor emeritus of hospitality management.
