How Akron compares to other universities

All state universities across Ohio are being challenged by rising costs and declining state support. At Akron, recent tuition increases have been used to improve academic quality and to enhance buildings and classrooms. Concurrently, the University has been reducing costs and strategically reinvesting the savings in areas that advance student success and retention. The result is that Akron remains an excellent value.

This chart shows where Akron compares with peer state universities in terms of tuition for the academic year that begins in fall 2006. You will notice that Akron's increase is among the lowest in the state, and students' tuition, general and facilities fees are less than what students are paying at five other public institutions.

1 FY 2007 data: Fees for full-time resident students entering in fall 2006. Data sources: Campus representatives, interviewed by Ohio State.

2 Tuition for the Cleveland State was increased above the 6 percent state fee cap due to an additional per credit hour fee in the student general fee for the student recreation center and student activities center building projects. This fee has been approved by OBOR and the Controlling Board and falls under the "exceptional circumstances" clause of the HB 66 budget bill legislation.

3 For FY 2007, Miami's in-state students receive an Ohio Resident Scholarship ranging from $4,705 to $5,000 and an Ohio Leader Scholarship ranging from $6,080 to $9,125 per year. These scholarships reduce Miami's resident undergraduate tuition to an average of $10,042 per year.

4 OSU tuition and fees for new students entering after Spring Quarter 2003. Excludes a $27 bus pass. Tuition for the Columbus Campus was increased 7.26 percent for a new full-time student including the Student Activity Fee and the Phase II Mandatory Recreation Fee (which is above the state fee cap).
