AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE:
Akron remains a great value
As you know, tuition will increase at The University of Akron for the 2006-07 academic year. These pages have been developed to help you understand:
- why tuition is rising;
- how tuition dollars are invested to advance student success; and
- how Akron's tuition compares to other universities.
If you have been on campus recently, you no doubt have noticed numerous physical improvements. At the same time, the University has strengthened programs and capabilities, enhanced its technology, achieved focused enrollment gains, and increased private and research funding. This is an exciting time to be part of The University of Akron. The increase in tuition will enable the University to sustain its commitment to academic excellence and access, while continuing to invest strategically in those areas that advance student success and retention.
The additional dollars from the 2006 tuition increase will enable us to:
- increase the amount of financial aid and scholarships to ensure that Akron remains affordable to outstanding applicants and current students;
- keep salaries competitive for our faculty and staff; and
- meet increases in energy and benefits costs.
The University has been diligent in reducing expenses:
- More than 100 vacated positions have been eliminated since Fiscal Year 2001.
- Operating budgets on the institutional, divisional and departmental levels have been reduced.
- Starting in 2004, UA employees now pay a portion of their health care costs.
- UA's budget review process has been overhauled to give highest priority to those programs and services that are critical to student success and retention.
The University will cut where it can and invest where it must so that it can continue to offer high quality academic programs and remain a great value in higher education.
