HOW TO COPE WITH TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION
In order to be successful at The University of Akron, adult learners need certain basic technological skills.

1. Mouse skills (your placement testing will be done on the computer, and if you do not have mouse skills, these will be more difficult for you).

2. Basic ability to type (25 words/minute will be very helpful in word-processing your papers).

3. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word (so you can word-process your papers).

4. E-mail skills (you must be able to send and receive e-mail and attach a document).

5. Basic library research skills.

RESOURCES

1. If you do not have a computer at home, go to your nearest public library or other facility with free access (such as the Akron Urban League, Family Solutions, or AMHA). You will find them listed at http://www.acorn.net/training/pdf/area_computer_facilities.pdf.

2. Learn to type on-line for free at http://www.learn2type.com
or at http://www.goodtyping.com.

3. Access free mouse-use and entry level computer skills tutorials at http://www.acorn.net/training/tutorials.html.

4. You may access a printable tutorial on e-mail skills at http://www.acorn.net/training/recommended.html.

5. Library catalog skills tutorial may be accessed at the same site as above. All Electronic Services can be found at http://www.ascpl.lib.oh.us/.

Got your UA Net ID and still have computer-phobia? Come and talk to us at UA Adult Focus, where we have our own computer lab just for adult learners. Remember, the best way to feel comfortable with computers is to practice, practice, practice. You will be surprised by how quickly your skills increase.
