. . . to The University of Akron, an energized metropolitan university dedicated to student success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Dr. Charles J. Fey,
Vice President for Student Engagement and Success
The Division of Student Engagement and Success plays a unique role in that regard. We offer co-curricular activities that extend student opportunities to learn, grow and develop in all aspects of their lives.
Why is it important for students to take advantage of these opportunities? National researchers consistently report that students who do become involved in these activities are more successful and graduate at a higher rate than students who do not become involved. Students also will learn valuable life-long skills. What kind of skills am I talking about? Students can develop leadership skills by participating in leadership training, living in our Leadership Learning Community, and by becoming involved in one or more of the 250-plus registered student organizations.
Students can become more culturally competent by attending art exhibitions, performances and lectures.
They can stay fit and healthy by playing in one of our many club sports or on an intramural team or exercising at our Student Recreation and Wellness Center, one of the largest on any Ohio campus. They can take in a movie, go bowling or shoot pool in our game room or simply hang out with friends in our bustling, modern Student Union. Students learn to become independent decision makers, become effective in group settings, and learn how to affect change in their communities. In short, they become prepared for the roles that they will assume in their own lives.
The professionals in the division also provide career advice, offer comfortable residence halls, health and international programs and services.
The Division of Student Engagement and Success serves, engages and empowers UA students outside the classroom, which is where a significant percentage of learning takes place.
The Division of Student Engagement and Success at The University of Akron is many things and many departments. We focus on the total student learning and living experience and many motivated employees within our division work diligently to make each student's UA experience the very best it can be!
Our Dean of Students and the Student Engagement departments help our students enjoy their time at The University of Akron. Those departments include: Student Union and Student Activities, Residence Life and Housing, Career Center, Counseling Services, Off-Campus Student Services and Student Judicial Affairs.
The Student Success departments, which include Health Services, International Student Programs, Academic Achievement Programs and Student Recreation and Wellness Services, help students get the most from their college experience. For instance, we have programs such as the Academic Achievement Programs, which include Upward Bound, the Pre-Engineering Program, Educational Talent Search and Strive Toward Excellence Program (STEP) that enable local (eligible) high school students to experience college life so they can see they have a place here.
The Office of Accessibility works with all students who have disabilities to ensure they have equal access to education at the UA. We want to make sure all students have the best experience on our campus.
All of these departments, programs and services are available to students in achieving their goal of earning a college degree. Student success is our reason for being.
Please let us know how we may be of help to you while you are with us. You have my sincerest wishes for your success at your University and in your life beyond our campus.
Sincerely,
Charles J. Fey, Ed.D.
