Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a four-hour television series for PBS and international broadcast, shot in 10 countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the U.S. Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's book, the documentary series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable — and fighting bravely to change them. Traveling with intrepid reporter Nicholas Kristof and A-list celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde, the film reflects viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offers an actionable blueprint for transformation. The University of Akron's 2012 V-Day benefit performance of Eve Ensler's “The Vagina Monologues” is a consciousness-raising event and fundraiser to help end violence against women and to celebrate women, their bodies and their experiences. All proceeds benefit the V-Day Organization and the Rape Crisis Center of Summit and Medina counties. The monologues will be performed by UA students, faculty, staff and Akron community members.
The theme for this year will be “Empowered Women For An Empowered World”.

2011 CNN Hero, Robina Niaz is Executive Director of Turning Point for Women and Families, a community based, non-profit organization founded in 2005 to address the needs of Muslim women and children through crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, advocacy, outreach, education and training. Robina's efforts to found this important resource have been recognized by several awards, including a current Soros Fellowship and the Union Square Awards in November 2005.
