May 11, 2004 - A team of mathematics researchers from The University of Akron has been awarded a $162,921 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The four UA researchers Dr. Jeffrey Adler of Akron, Dr. Judith Palagallo of Stow, Dr. Thomas E. Price Jr. of Stow, and Dr. Jeffrey Riedl of Akron received the three-year grant for a project titled Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (Algebra, Number Theory, and Applications).
As an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site, the team will work with eight undergraduate students selected nationwide each summer on a variety of research projects covering topics from code breaking to fractal geometry. Currently, this is the only active NSF-supported REU site in Ohio with a focus on mathematics.
Receiving an REU grant from the National Science Foundation is quite an honor and reflects well on the accomplishments of our faculty and the strength of our programs in undergraduate research, says Dr. Jianping Zhu, chair of UA's Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics. I am delighted that our faculty members will have the opportunity to enhance the research efforts of our undergraduate students, as well as those from other institutions across the country.
