Principalship

The University of Akron’s principalship program prepares candidates for Ohio state principalship license through a masters degree and post-masters component. This rigorous program prepares candidates to meet national standards for educational administration. These standards are currently used by Ohio (and over 30 other states) to evaluate educational administrators. These standards are based on the Interstate School Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) (Council, 1996). These ISLLC standards as used by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) (National Policy Board, 2002) in cooperation with the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education to accredit educational administration programs.

The principalship program requires that candidates be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and dispositions as outlined in the Ohio Principalship Standards and the Educational Leadership Licensure Consortium. The standards are assessed as part of coursework and require that candidates in the program are able to demonstrate leadership in their schools. Admission Requirements

The Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership requires no supplemental materials in addition to submission of the graduate application and official transcripts for admission to the master's degree program in Principalship. A valid teaching license is required for admission.

Application Deadline

Applications to the master's degree program in Principalship are accepted on a rolling basis.

Assistantship/Scholarship Information

Not all departments offer graduate assistantships. Students should inquire with the department directly to determine assistantship availability.
