Business: Taxation, MTax

Master of Taxation

About the Degree

The College of Business Administration (CBA) School of Accountancy offers the only MTax program in the region. The program provides a framework of conceptual, technical, and professional knowledge that helps students develop the expertise needed to examine and understand many aspects of the tax structure. Through an integrated curriculum with emphasis on tax concepts, substantive knowledge of federal and state taxation, tax research, communication skills, and tax planning, students will develop an ability to identify and solve tax problems.

The MTax curriculum consists of 24 credits of required taxation classes and six credits of elective classes in specialized taxation areas. Students may use the six credits of electives to focus their taxation studies in areas that fit their interests.

Students with an interest in both law and taxation may consider the highly attractive joint Juris Doctor (J.D.)/MTax degree, which provides a specialized graduate education in taxation by adding the equivalent of only one semester to the time that it normally takes to complete the J.D. program.

Students in the MTax study tax research methods, corporate tax, partnership tax, state and local tax, tax policy and ethics, international tax, risk and uncertain tax positions, and tax accounting methods.

Salary and Career Outlook

Graduates from the MTax program work as tax specialists in public accounting, industry and government. They help businesses and individuals comply with tax laws and regulations, address tax litigation issues, lead tax planning activities, assist with corporate strategy, and help clients with addressing disputes that involve the IRS or state/local agencies. Demand for tax specialists with MTax degrees is high and should be buoyant for the foreseeable future.

Starting salaries for entry-level tax specialists with the MTax Degree is between $50,000 and $60,000 per year, depending on prior experience.
