Dance Fundamentals

Dancers express ideas, stories, rhythm, and sound with their bodies. They perform in a variety of settings, presenting an array of dance types. UA’s dance program combines traditional academics with performance opportunities and technical training in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and tap.

Hands-on Experience

As a dance major, you will perfect your craft and develop leadership skills through study and performance with:

  • The University of Akron Dance Company — Faculty and guest choreographers create original work on students for main stage performances at Daum Theatre each fall and E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall every spring.
  • The University of Akron Dance Company Touring Ensemble — Educational productions are created and performed by dance students using ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and modern dance in Akron public schools to expose young audiences to dance as an art form.
  • Choreographers' Workshop — Dance students develop dance composition skills and present their work for public performances.
  • Community engagement events.
  • Guest artists and professional dance company residencies.

UA home to the new National Center for Choreography

Only the second of its kind in the country, the National Center for Choreography (NCCAkron) supports the research and development of new work in dance at the highest level. Serving as a catalyst for artistic, cultural and community advancement, this anchor space for creative research and process is based in Guzzetta Hall. NCCAkron simultaneously strengthens the national dance ecosystem and exposes The University of Akron students to professional choreographers and companies from all over.

Career Services is located in Student Union 211, with another office in College of Arts and Sciences Building 126. Career Services provides career coaching and programming, and develops valuable relationships with employers and campus partners to provide students with many opportunities for experiential learning and career development.
