Sensory Bag Program

Zippy's Pouch

Zippy’s Pouch is a new collaborative program between the Office of Accessibility and Zip Assist, made possible through funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) Mental Health Grant. These bags were developed to support UA students and campus guests who may experience sensory overload in busy or overstimulating environments. Each bag contains tools to help individuals regulate, refocus, and stay grounded. By offering Zippy’s Pouch at your event, you are supporting inclusive options for individuals with a wide range of sensory needs.

Each Sensory Bag contains:

  • A quick guide card with instructions for use and return
  • Noise reducing headphones/ear plugs
  • Fidget tools
  • Sunglasses
  • Tissues
  • Candy
  • Business cards and resource information for mental health and student support services

Each Zippy’s Pouch sensory bag costs approximately $27.36 to assemble. There is no charge to use sensory bags when all items are returned in good condition. Replacement charges may apply only if specific items outlined below are missing or damaged upon return.

Approximate replacement costs for items that must be returned:

  • Drawstring Bags: $13 each
  • Noise‑reducing headphones: $7 each
  • Fidget tools (variety): $2–5 each

Providing Sensory Bags is an easy way to make your event more inclusive and welcoming. Campus partners are encouraged to make Sensory Bags available at events where sensory stimulation may be high or unpredictable, including:

  • Large gatherings such as fairs, orientations, or open houses
  • Performances, ceremonies, and athletic events
  • Events with amplified sound, bright lighting, or crowded spaces

To ensure availability and proper preparation, campus partners should follow these steps:

  • Use the Sensory Bag Checkout Form to request bags for your upcoming event. Please keep in mind that requests must be submitted at least four business days prior to your event.
  • Our team will review your request and follow up with availability and pickup details.
  • Please return all bags and items within the agreed timeframe within three business days of the date of checkout.

Reduce Sensory Load

  • Lower music volume
  • Dim harsh or fluorescent lighting when possible
  • Offer quieter seating or break areas
  • Use visual schedules, signage, or agendas

Provide Clear Communication

  • Let attendees know what to expect ahead of time
  • Share maps, schedules, and transition cues
  • Offer early access or designated “quiet hours” when feasible
