Class notes

Mae Packan, BSED ’35, MSED ’57, who resides in Clinton, Ohio, celebrated her 101st birthday in April! Packan taught history for 43 years, retiring from Coventry High School in 1978. A story about her in the Akron Beacon Journal at the time of her birthday highlighted the tremendous impact she had on her students, many of whom continue to be in contact with her.

 

Delmont E. “Bud” McAnallen, BA ’66, hiked Rim to Rim at the Grand Canyon in June. Total hike for the three days was about 32 miles, with elevation changes of about 16,000 feet.

 

Judi C. Hill, BSED ’79, newly elected president of the Akron NAACP, was named to the board of Leadership Akron. Hill is a 2008 recipient of the Distinguished Education Alumni award from The University of Akron and works with the court-appointed guardian ad litem program.

 

Susan Kay Passmore, BSN ’76, received Mercy Medical Center’s Distinguished Nurse Leader Award, which recognizes a Mercy nurse who consistently demonstrates exceptional skills; visionary leadership; and compassionate care for patients, families, and staff.

 

Robin L. Steinhorn, BS ’76, has been elected to the American Pediatric Society Council. Steinhorn, who received her medical degree from Washing University, is chair of the Department of Pediatrics and medical director of UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento, Calif.

 

Dennis V. Yacobozzi, BSBAF ’71, is the founder and president of United American Capital Corporation, which recently was honored with a No. 76 ranking on CNBC’s Top 100 Fee-Only Advisor List for 2015. Established in 1991, the Columbus, Ohio-based wealth management firm has more than $4 billion in assets and is one of the largest firms in Ohio to exclusively manage the assets of public entities.

 

John C. Cox, BS ’87, was appointed vice president of the Arkansas and Oklahoma branches of CNA Financial Corporation in April. In this role, Cox leads both branch teams to serve the diverse needs of CNA customers.

 

Mark S. Harmon, BA ’85, MA ’88, recently was hired as the executive director of the Washington County Museum in Hillsboro, Ore. Harmon brings 26 years of executive experience in museum administration to his new position.

 

John S. Ligas, BSCHe ’80, was named vice president of research and development at Transitions Optical in April. In this new position, Ligas manages the R&D team, including the evolution of light management technology. Additionally, he continues to serve as a member of the company’s operating committee. Ligas joined Transitions Optical as engineering manager in 1992.

 

Sima S. Merick, AAS ’85, assistant director since 2001 of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, has been promoted to executive director. The Ohio EMA coordinates the state’s response to emergencies by getting supplies, personnel, and equipment to needed locations.

 

Larry J. Pollock, BSME ’87, was named executive vice president and chief manufacturing officer at Universal Stainless & Alloy Products Inc. In this newly created position, Pollock is responsible for manufacturing operations and engineering at all Universal Stainless facilities, which include Bridgeville, Pa.; Titusville, Pa.; Dunkirk, N.Y.; and North Jackson, Ohio.

 

Renjarajan Ramesh, MSCHe ’87, PhD ’92, was appointed to the board of directors for LiqTech International. Dr. Ramesh, a noted expert and international consultant to governments and companies on water-related activities, has four patents and was awarded UA’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.

 

Judy L. Thompson, BA ’83, MA ’85, received the 2015 Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award. Thompson is a speech-language pathologist at Ida Sue School in Wooster, Ohio, and holds certifications in both audiology and speech therapy.

 

T. Robert Whitehouse, BA ’87, is the new senior vice president of marketing and community relations for Summa Health System, responsible for strategic direction and oversight of marketing, advertising, public relations, corporate communications, community relations, and community benefit.

Thomas F. Boggs, BS ’94, MBA ’01, was named the first chief executive officer of Healthcare Solutions Network, a newly formed health organization. Boggs began his new position May 4.

 

Rebecca A. Corrigan, MPA ’97, is the new part-time village administrator for Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

 

Kelly D. Dever, BSED ’90, is the new assistant superintendent of North Canton City School District. Dever has spent the last several years as the coordinator of achievement and accountability for Green Local Schools in Smithville, Ohio.

 

William H. DiMascio, BA ’93, MSED ’01, has been named coordinator of career technical education for the West Shore Career Technical District in Lakewood, Ohio.

 

Peter L. Donato, MBA ’99, joined Assurex Health as senior vice president and chief financial officer in June 2015. Donato has 23 years of financial management and counting experience, largely for health-care companies.

 

Joanne M. Green, BA ’99, will become executive director of Summit Artspace in mid-July. A well-known communications leader in Akron, she most recently served as director of marketing and public relations for the Akron Symphony Orchestra.

 

Jason M. Keith, BSCHe ’95, was named dean of the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University in June. A nationally recognized leader in engineering education, Keith served as interim dean and was chosen after an extensive national search.

 

Lois M. Knox, MBA ’94, was named director of the Florida Small Business Development Center, effective July 1. She received the Florida SBDC Network State Office Employee of the Year Award in 2013.

 

Kristen A. Lewis, BS ’93, was promoted to national sales manager at Fomo Products. Lewis is responsible for managing sales team and customer accounts across the United States.

 

Lisa L. Mansfield, BAED ’91, was named managing director of the Weathervane Playhouse in mid-May. During her nine years with the theater, Mansfield previously served as education programs coordinator and patron services manager.

 

Stephanie H. York, JD ’94, was named director of communications and public relations for Akron General Health Hospital. Formerly, she served the city of Akron as director of communications.

Kyle Kutuchief, MPA ’06, is the new local program director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In his six-month stint as interim, Kyle demonstrated he is a next-generation leader and brings to the position a deep history of the community and profound knowledge of the people and the assets.

 

Nicole L. Mullett, BA ’02, MA ’11, is the founding executive director of ArtsNow, a new organization that opened in Summit County, Ohio, on July 1. ArtsNow will work to strengthen the vibrancy and vitality of Summit County and enrich the lives of the community through the advancement of arts and culture in partnership with arts and culture organizations, other nonprofit and civic organizations, businesses, and individuals. Mullett joined ArtsNow from The University of Akron, where she was director of tech prep for the College of Applied Science and Technology.
