Research Spotlight: Silver Trade Across the Mediterranean basin

Dr. Christine Thompson is a Classicist, whose research focuses on the intersections of myth, archaeology, and the hard sciences, to reconstruct lost or obscure periods of Mediterranean history.  She currently directs the Hacksilber Project, and investigates the related topics of the chronology and loci of Phoenician expansion, the possible locations of biblical Tarshish, and the nature of regeneration and transformation throughout the Mediterranean after widespread destructions around 1200 BCE.  To these ends, she combines her background in philology with field research involving the study of metals (silver, gold and bronze) found in hoard and grave contexts, eliciting data from contextual, stylistic, lead isotope and elemental analyses.
