Course Overview

This course has been tailored specifically for Six Sigma Black Belts and Lean Masters, who by definition already have a high degree of process maturity. Both of those disciplines have “incremental improvement” as their foundation and “toolboxes” filled with many tools and methods.

The difference in this methodology is that the foundation could be referred to as; innovation, complete removal of problems or drastic improvement. The “toolbox” in this approach only has a few tools but they are very involved, requiring deep knowledge of the process, considerable patience, willingness to think abstractly as well as to think very deeply about the subject… often done individually in quiet contemplation.

There are two systematic methods that are likely to be new for the students; “Physics-Based Causal Analysis” and “TRIZ”. Physics-Based Causal Analysis is much deeper and more rigorous than common “root cause analysis” techniques. TRIZ (treez) is the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Developed in the USSR in the 1940s, the method has grown in popularity over the past decade. TRIZ utilizes proven inventive principles, as gleaned from patents, that allow the practitioner to attack seemingly-impossible problems with elegant solutions, i.e. solutions that are simple, inexpensive, implementable and free of compromise.

Attendees will learn to:

  • Perform a “Physics-Based Causal Analysis” on a simple problem.
  • Identify underlying conflicts, trade-offs and contradictions within several problems
  • Utilize "separation" strategies to completely solve several example problems
  • Identify and eliminate low value components to simplify a system
  • Predict the evolution of a system or product

This course is for six sigma engineers, researchers, scientists, managers and technical leaders within:

  • New Product Development
  • Research & Development
  • Engineering
  • Manufacturing
  • Marketing
  • Supplier Management

*Extensive knowledge or experience in any particular area is not required
