04/26/2013

Art antiquities in the black market and a Steinway piano serenade in a garden setting are featured in this spring's Arts-in-Residence Series offered by The University of Akron's Fine Arts Division.

Pianist Joe Augustine will present "Steinway in Bloom" on June 7, hosted by Cynthia Knight and Fran Buchholzer at Knight's guesthouse in Bath for UA's Arts-in-Residence Series.

On Thursday, May 16, beginning at 7:30 p.m., UA art historian Elisha Ann Dumser will talk about "Loot! Antiquities Collecting and the Black Market" at the West Akron home of well-known art advocates Rick and Alita Rogers. Dumsher will reveal how nearly all antiquities entering American collections over the past 40 years have emerged from illegal excavations, clandestine smuggling operations and a thriving black market. She'll also discuss objects in Northeast Ohio art collections. The evening will include delicious desserts and an opportunity to explore the Rogers' own collection of contemporary art.

On Friday, June 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is "Steinway in Bloom," co-hosted by Cynthia Knight and Fran Buchholzer. The evening will begin with Lolly the Trolley transporting guests from the Akron General Health & Wellness Center - West in Montrose to Knight's guesthouse in Bath. Guests can enjoy wine and other beverages while strolling the enchanting gardens. Following a full dinner catered by Splendid Fare, UA jazz pianist Joe Augustine will perform on a magnificent Steinway grand piano.

"Loot!" on May 16 is $35. "Steinway in Bloom" on June 7 is $60, which includes the full meal. Guests can register for one program only, or save by registering for both programs for $85. All proceeds support programs for students in the visual and performing arts at UA, and all registration fees are fully tax deductible.
